Dr. Fizzlebop: Float or Sink

Do you wear floaties when you go swimming? Today at Fizzlebop labs, we’ll use an orange to learn how things float!

Gather

2 oranges
2 clear glasses

Go

1. Peel one of the oranges.
2. Fill the glasses with water.
3. Place both oranges in the water.

“Dr. Fizzlebop, what’s happening?”
Even though it’s heavier, the unpeeled orange floats. When you go swimming, you might wear a life jacket or swim floats. These devices contain foam or another substance that is lightweight and filled with pockets of air. These air pockets help you float. The peel of the orange has lots of little air bubbles in it too. The peel acts like a life jacket for the orange, so it floats!

You can find 52 fun science experiments (and family devotions) in the new book, Faith and Science with Dr. Fizzlebop.
